I’m Eileen Higgins. Welcome to my blog. What you’ll find here are musings about what I'm thinking about, reading about, wondering about, and wish I knew more about. Lots of it is about Miami and Miami-Dade County because this is my home and I love it. I think about where I live a lot because I believe it can be the best place on earth with a few tweaks. I think a lot about poverty, friendship, justice, freedom, how lucky I am to live here, and how we live, work, and commute together.
Warning: You will sometimes be subjected to some nutty musings or videos about books I'm reading. My equally nuttier family often directs or stars in them.
I’m a long-time business professional with a strong bent for community work. I got my start working for numerous large global companies in engineering, new product development, and finally marketing. Since the early 2000s, I began to carve out more and more time to advocate for issues that affected the communities I lived in. I liked giving back enough that I sought out work with the Peace Corps and was blessed to live in Belize as the Peace Corps Country Director. Transferring to Mexico, I worked with our Ambassador, particularly on programs designed to reduce violence and identify cross-border energy solutions to climate change. Now I’m a small business owner with my sister and dad and have my own Miami-based marketing business. But, I haven’t stopped trying to spend a good chunk of my personal time advocating for issues that I think matter.
In 2018 I began serving my neighbors as their County Commissioner for Miami-Dade County. It's an honor, but one that keeps me pretty busy (as it should) So I'm a bit behind on blogging. Be patient with me.
When poet Mary Oliver asks me "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" I hope to be able to say "Everything."
