Go Home

Go Home

Governor McAuliffe told the neo-Nazis and white supremacists to "Go Home." They were not wanted in Charlottesville. They were not wanted in Virginia.

What are their homes like? What do they talk about over Sunday dinner when they are home?  Is everybody packed up for next week's trip? Guns. Check. Sticks. Check. Shields. Check. Nazi flags. Check. Confederate flags. Check. Car gassed up. Check.  Let's go hurt some people who aren't white. Pass the mashed potatoes please.

Some may live half way across the country, but others likely live right next door to us. They still follow the raised hand of Donald Trump and raise their hands to empower him. Some are white supremacists. Some believe in party over country. Some saw a chance to get their old jobs back. Not all have answered his call to violence, but many did this weekend. I never thought I'd quote David Duke nor think he is right about anything, but he spoke the truth in his tweet to the President. "I would recommend you take a good look in the mirror & remember it was White Americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists." A man who should have stayed home killed Heather Heyer. Instead, he answered his President's call to serve on his vitriolic front lines.

I am a proud white American who did not vote for Donald Trump and I am an ashamed white American because I know people who did. Some of them are in my own family. Yes, in my home. Dinners have been awkward ever since.

We cannot address our nation's economic woes by leaving anyone behind. Even Ronald Reagan could imagine an America "teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace."

Van Jones was in Miami Beach on Sunday. He said something about home as we stood for a moment of silence to honor Heather Heyer. "She didn't get to go home. She didn't get to go home." He also told us to talk to each other and get to know the why behind our beliefs and actions.  Sounds like it's time for another conversation over dinner at home.

Shouldn't the American Dream bring happiness?
